Wisdom Teeth Surgery

Wisdom teeth are the third molars which erupt between the ages of 18 to 25, often into a mal-aligned position, and they are then termed impacted wisdom teeth. They may trap food and this causes dental decay and gum disease, which may involve adjacent molars as well.

The eruptive force of wisdom teeth may cause the front teeth to become crowded or mal-aligned as well. Sometimes, wisdom teeth can be associated with cysts and other pathologies.

Dental Surgeons recommend the surgical removal of such problematic wisdom teeth. Generally, wisdom teeth surgery can be safely done under Local Anaesthesia in an outpatient setting. The Dental Surgeon explains any risks and potential complications of the surgery, and takes Informed Consent prior to the procedure.

After achieving anaesthesia, the Dental Surgeon gently pushes away the gum tissue covering the wisdom tooth. Any bone preventing the extraction of the wisdom tooth is minimally removed, and the tooth may have to be divided into pieces for removal. The wound is washed with sterile saline, cleaned of debris and stitched up for uneventful healing.

In the local context, Medisave Funds may be used for wisdom teeth surgery. Call Icon Dental Surgeons for a no-obligation consultation about removal of your wisdom teeth.
